Our latest case study gives an overview of the process ActionAid International (AAI) undertook to develop its people management scorecard.
The scorecard was created as a mechanism to collect people management information from different sources such as human resources (HR) audits, HR reports and staff exit interviews, and track a country’s progress in HR over a period of time. The aim was to provide management with a snapshot of each country’s progress and benchmark and compare country indices to their region and globally. This information can then inform decision-making and strategy. The scorecard can also be used as a transparent index in Country Director and HR Manager performance indicators. Finally, the tool celebrates and shares best practices across the organisation’s HR community and the whole organisation.
This case study details the process, challenges overcome, results and lessons learned. Reading the case study is particularly useful for those wishing to design or implement an HR ‘scorecard’ or similar tool within their own organisations.
Factors for success included:
- Buy-in from management but mainly the federation’s HR community.
- Ensuring a clear understanding of which indices will be measured and how this can be done in a fair and transparent manner.
- Successfully leveraging existing global HR information.
- The ability to add value to the organisation by providing regular, data-driven information on people management processes.
- The ability to compile people management information into a more meaningful format that can be used in decision-making at management level.
AAI’s people management scorecard is now a mechanism for describing and measuring how people and people management systems create value in an organisation.
